CSK CEO confirms Dhoni’s participation against Gujarat Titans despite left knee injury forcing him to skip training
Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the captain of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), has suffered a left knee injury that has raised questions about his participation in the opening game of the Indian Premier League (IPL) against the Gujarat Titans on Friday. However, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan has dismissed any doubts and confirmed that Dhoni will be playing in the match.
It is believed that the 41-year-old veteran sustained the injury during a training session in Chennai and did not bat during CSK’s nets on Thursday. If Dhoni is unable to play, CSK might consider using either Devon Conway or Ambati Rayudu as a wicketkeeper, as they do not have a specialized stumper in their squad.
Dhoni typically does a lot of pre-season training but conserves energy once the tournament begins. However, given his age, any injury can potentially worsen quickly and take longer to heal. With the IPL involving a lot of traveling and back-to-back matches, there is a chance that Dhoni may choose to sit out of the opener to avoid aggravating his injury and missing more matches in the later stages of the tournament.
Despite this possibility, Dhoni is renowned for his resilience and has played through many injuries, including back problems. He is unlikely to miss matches unless it is absolutely necessary.
CSK, one of the most successful franchises in IPL history, will be looking to bounce back after a disappointing campaign last year, where they failed to qualify for the playoffs for the first time in the tournament’s history. Dhoni, who retired from international cricket in August 2020, will be hoping to lead his team to their fourth IPL title.
