Gambhir believes Rohit and Kohli will play major role in ODI World Cup success for India
Gautam Gambhir, a former India opener, believes that seniors like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who are both great spin players, will play a major role in the ODI World Cup to be held in India later in the year.
Gambhir stated that India must identify fearless cricketers and include a mix of players in the 50-over format.
First, identify those players who have shown fearlessness and then in a format of 50 overs, it is necessary to have a mix of all types of players. There are players that can anchor their innings. Gambhir stated that a change in roles has made a big difference on Star Sports’ ‘Road to World Cup Glory.’
I believe people like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who can anchor their innings and who can probably play spin really well, will play a huge role in the next World Cup.”
According to the politician-turned-cricketer, the introduction of two balls at two ends has altered the ODI template.
“During that time, we only had one new ball. Now we have two new balls with five fielders inside. The role of part-timer has been thrown out the window. Gambhir stated that the reverse swings are not as common as you used to see. He also said that there isn’t enough chase for finger spinners.
“But, I feel that we have to identify the players who can easily adapt these roles or that template when we talk about this approach, which India always discusses, and that is what we need to do.”
Gambhir stated that India should stick to a few players and test them in matches to be successful in the ODI World Cup.
People who have played more than one format can take a break. But they cannot take a break in T20 cricket. They were able to play together. “I believe the biggest mistake Indian cricket made in the two World Cups was that these players have not played enough cricket together. Ask me, how many times have you seen the best 11-on-11?
He said, “We haven’t, only during World Cup we decided that the best playing 11 was possible but unfortunately that wasn’t the best playing 11.”
Gambhir stated that Indian cricketers should not play the IPL and should prioritise 50-over cricket with the World Cup in view.
“These guys must play enough white-ball cricket, especially for 50 overs World Cup together, regardless of whether they wish to take a break from T20 or IPL. The break must be in the T20 format, not 50 overs. “If the franchisee must suffer, they have to suffer. Indian cricket is the primary stake holder, and not IPL. IPL is a byproduct. He said that if India wins the World Cup, it is the biggest ovation and the largest ring.
“… If an important player is unable to attend the IPL games, so be it. The IPL takes place every year and the World Cup only once in four years. For me, winning the World Cup is more important than winning IPL.
